A tropical vine native to India and southern Asia, Abrus precatorius grows 12-15 feet in full to part sun and moist, well drained soil. Slender, twining stems display showy, violet pea-like blooms that hang in clusters with dainty, pinnate, oval shaped leaves. Seeds are formed in pea shaped pods and when ripe, are a brilliant two toned black and red. Often used as rosary beads, the hard shiny seeds are highly ornamental, but very poisonous if consumed.
