Aristolochia Gigantea NEW FOR 2008

Bizarre, weird, extraordinary. These are only a few adjectives to describe the enormous flowers on the Giant Dutchmans Pipe. With some blooms as large as 18 x 12 inches, this can make an incredible display when several flowers are open at once. Pipe-vine Swallowtail Butterflies are attracted to the blooms with their rich burgundy color networked in creamy-ivory as well as flies which are trapped overnight to effect pollination. A vigorous grower, this variety can attain a height of 20 feet in warmer climates and is hardy in zones 10 and 11. An added bonus to growing this vine (as if the amazing blooms aren’t enough) is the pleasant citrusy scent that the blooms use to attract the pollinating flies. All in all, this is a great addition to any garden or landscape with attractive heart-shaped leaves which are loaded with traffic-stopping blooms in August and September.
