Showy racemes of brilliant red trumpet-shaped blooms open in late summer on 24-36 inch tall stems. Native to South Africa, broad sword-like leaves provide interest when not in bloom. Ideal for cut flowers, Crocosmia is also prized by floral arrangers for the attractive seed pods which appear in the fall. Grown in sunny, well drained areas, this long lived perennial is hardy in zones 5-8 and should have a thick layer of mulch in colder climates. Pkt. 20

Sow seeds in moist potting mix. Cover seeds lightly, leaving portions of the seed exposed as light aids germination. Place container inside baggie to retain moisture and humidity. Keep container at 65-70°F. Pot in 3 inch pots as seedlings appear. Or can be sown outdoors where they are to grow in late spring. Germination is variable 30-90 days.
